INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF TENNIS @ Shula’s Athletic Club
Australian, Bob Butterfield has been in the academy arena for more than 30 years. His International Academy of Tennis is now headquartered in Miami Lakes, Florida. The location allows easy access, with Miami International Airport close by. Based at Shula’s Athletic Club, the academy offers a well balanced program for the serious player. Quality tennis instruction is complimented by a daily fitness regimen. With both clay and hard courts, players are able to practice on different surfaces. An abundance of Junior USTA tournaments in the Miami area means players are able to compete within a short drive from the club. Shula’s Athletic Club offers a wide range of fitness classes, plus a full service spa. Miami Lakes is a short distance from many amenities in the Miami area, but maintains a village atmosphere. Located adjacent to the Athletic Club is Don Shula’s Hotel and Golf Club.
Bob, alongside international coach Paulo Hexsel, and their team of coaches provide a caring atmosphere of fun and camaraderie. While leading students through a system that motivates players to perform to their potential and prepare for competitive tennis, on local, national, international junior, college and professional levels; staff members encourage players to meet their goals.
The year round program prepares players for top level tournaments and college tennis. College placement is a service that the academy is able to provide. Students have received scholarships to NCAA and NAIA colleges. With a large network of institutions, players are matched to a college that suits their interest. While at the academy, students are housed with local families, in a home environment.
In our efforts to touch the lives of each of our students, we create an atmosphere where every player is given the opportunity to reach their potential as an athlete and as a well rounded individual. The mixing of cultures and nationalities, gives each participant a chance to gain knowledge about the wider world and understanding that while we come from different backgrounds, we are all the same. Pursuing our dreams and using the sport of tennis to better learn about each other.

Paulo Hexsel (Head Professional)
For the past 8 years Paulo has been coaching and developing junior players of all ages, for Bob Butterfield’s International Academy of Tennis. He has guided many junior players on a path to ITF, USTA National and college levels.
A native of Brazil, Paulo played his competitive junior tennis in Brazil and South America, reaching high Brazilian junior rankings. His playing experience included playing professional level tournaments throughout South America. His capabilities earned him a Division 1 college scholarship to play for University of Tennessee, Martin. Arriving at UT Martin with little English, Paulo went on to gain a Masters in Business Administration and a command of the English language.
Paulo brings his knowledge and experience as a touring pro and Division 1 college player to the junior program at Shula’s Athletic Club. He has an eye for identifying and developing the talents of each player, and connects with each of his students to bring out their best potential. Paulo enjoys passing on his experiences and wisdom to the students and guiding them toward a satisfying career on the tennis courts and college education.
Although a great deal of Paulo’s time has been spent working with juniors, he enjoys the clinics and social activities involving adult players. To bring a beginner group from not knowing anything about the game to a group that enjoys competition is extremely rewarding. Watching the progress and excitement adults achieve in a short period of time is rewarding. Paulo is always ready to talk tennis; your game, the pro’s game, rules, stroke production, whatever you have on your mind.
An enthusiastic, positive and knowledgeable professional Paulo is eager to develop the game and tennis experience of your entire family.
